Greta Garbo in Flesh and the Devil
at the Castro Theater
Saturday, May 30, 7pm
Tickets: $22, general admission
At PPIE1915 the Swedish Pavilion showed films weekly, to proclaim their leadership in this new artistic medium and creative industry. Many of the country’s actors, directors and cinematographers have become legendary. One such person is Greta Garbo. Now you have the opportunity to see why.
The 20th Anniversary of SF Silent Film Festival will feature a film starring Greta Garbo and Tora Teje in “Flesh and the Devil,” introduced by Kevin Browlow with live musical accompaniment by the Matti Bye Ensemble.
Leo (John Gilbert) and Ulrich (Lars Hanson) are companions whose lifelong friendship is torn apart over their mutual love for the beautiful Felicitas (Greta Garbo). Directed by Clarence Brown and with photography by William H. Daniels. Garbo is at her most alluring in this film, and the growing off-screen passion between her and Gilbert permeates their on-screen chemistry.
